Portland summers are glorious but also a little unpredictable. Your best bet is to dress in layers. Bring whatever clothes you’ll be comfortable being active in, plus a light water-resistant jacket and comfy walking shoes. Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat are a plus. Don’t forget your pjs and toiletries, but we’ll provide the linens so you can leave your bedding and pillows at home.
Bring a state-issued ID card or high school ID card. You’ll be able to get your UP ID while you’re on campus if you don’t have it already.

Summer WAVE is for all admitted students attending UP for the first time in Fall 2024. There will be some opportunities for parents and family members to learn more about UP as well, please consult the schedule for more information!
Absolutely! Even if you already have a few semesters of college under your belt, Summer WAVE is your chance to get to know your new home on The Bluff, have fun with your fellow Pilots, and get a head start on shaping your academic journey.
All admitted students will have received an email invitation with a link to the registration page. You can also visit our Summer WAVE website for the link.
Students will have the opportunity to rank their top three choices. Therefore, the earlier you register and select your top choice, the higher the chance you’ll get it. Parents and family members are encouraged to design their own exploration of what Portland has to offer, take a look at this page for our recommendations.
It’s free! All meals, lodging, and excursions are included. The only thing you’ll have to pay for are the costs associated with your transportation to campus.
Arrive anytime during check-in on the first day, which is 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
From the main entrance, follow the signs to Corrado Hall, which is in our North Quad behind Franz Hall and Shiley Hall. We’ll have student leaders ready to guide you and help you check in. You can also check out our campus map.
Contact Student Activities with your specific request.
We have a separate reception and info sessions scheduled for parents and supporters on the first day. However, Summer WAVE is mainly intended for incoming students. This is a great opportunity for any family members traveling with you to check out Portland, and they can start by visiting our list of area hotels and restaurants.
UP is just 20 minutes by car from Portland International Airport. You can take a taxi or a rideshare (such as Uber or Lyft) from the designated areas outside of baggage claim.
If taking Trimet public transit, use the Trip Planner site to plan your trip. You can buy a ticket at the airport MAX station and take the Red Line train toward City Center. Get off at the Rose Quarter Transit Center, walk 2 minutes to N. Interstate stop, and catch the #35 bus toward University of Portland. Get off at N. Portsmouth & N. Willamette and follow the signs to Corrado Hall.
Call a ride share or taxi, or take Trimet public transit. You can use the Trimet Trip Planner site to plan your trip. From Portland Union Station, walk 7 minutes to NW Everett and 5th Avenue, take the #44 bus towards St Johns via Rosa Parks Way. Get off at N. Willamette & N. Haven and follow the signs to Corrado Hall.
Overnight stay: This is a key part of the program, as spending the night in one of our residence halls will give you a great introduction to community living and provide more opportunities to get to know your peers. You might even start imagining how you’ll decorate your own dorm room come fall and get a jump start on your packing list!
Resist the urge to scroll: While you’re welcome to bring a cell phone, we encourage you to only use it when absolutely necessary. We want you to get the most out of this incredible opportunity to engage with peers, faculty, staff, and campus life.
Stick around campus: We get it—Portland is full of cool stuff to do, but you’ll need to save your must-see list for later. Summer WAVE is about connection, building community, and having fun together.
Do the right thing: We trust our incoming Pilots to know how to be good guests, but if you’re not sure what’s allowed and what’s not, check the Student Handbook.
Get prepared: You likely still have lots of questions about life at UP. Well, you're in luck because our handy Pre-Arrival Orientation Course has the answers. This interactive course will tell you everything you need to know to prepare for fall. We expect all incoming students to take the course. Do it before Summer WAVE and you’ll be ahead of the game.
