About
Portland is the award-winning magazine published out of University of Portland, a Catholic school located in Oregon that was founded by the Congregation of Holy Cross. We aim for deeply human stories with roots in the University community and its values. In its more than 40-year existence, the magazine has had three editors, John Soisson, Brian Doyle (author of One Long River of Song, Martin Marten, Children and Other Wild Animals, among others), and Jessica Murphy Moo (librettist of the operas An American Dream, Earth to Kenzie, and Loving v. Virginia). Under Doyle’s editorship, Annie Dillard called it “the best spiritual magazine in America,” with contributions from writers like Mary Oliver, David James Duncan, Ursula LeGuin, Cynthia Ozick, Barry Lopez, and Cornel West, among many others. The magazine today continues in this tradition, while celebrating the contributions of faculty, staff, and alums through compelling stories and stellar writing.
