Division of Student Affairs

"Education is the art of helping young people to completeness"
— Blessed Basil Moreau, C.S.C.

Teaching and learning, faith and formation, and service and leadership distinguish the Catholic, holistic vision of education at the University of Portland. As Holy Cross educators, the Division of Student Affairs provides the professional and pastoral support to foster communities of charity and learning where each member is welcomed. Together we pursue significant questions that transform lives. We nurture the whole person — hearts, hands, and minds. We teach and practice responsibility to the common good, beginning with the moment of inquiry and through a life-long relationship with the University of Portland.

For any general questions and inquiries about the Division of Student Affairs, contact the Office of Student Affairs at 503-943-8532 or e-mail studentaffairs@up.edu

Moreau Center for Service and Justice

The Moreau Center for Service and Justice (MCSJ) continues its work to promote social justice, connecting students with community engagement opportunities, and collaborating with our student leaders to develop our programs. Much of our work has moved to virtual/on-line platforms, though we can offer some opportunities for safe, smaller in-person engagement. We are in conversation with community partners of ways we can support their work remotely, from virtual tutoring to letter writing and more. MCSJ staff are developing hybrid models of in-person and virtual services and programs including advising of individual students and leadership formation. We remain committed to being available to our students, and meetings can be arranged by appointment. Please contact us with any inquiries, questions, or concerns at 503-943-7132 or these can be emailed to us at: moreaucenter@up.edu

We allow one person at a time in our office to conduct basic business, including obtaining a new Pilot identification card, purchasing a bicycle lock or a parking permit. To limit exposure, we often have our front door locked, just knock on the door or call our non-emergency number to request entry. Our officers are available to walk with you across campus and even to homes in the nearby neighborhood if you are concerned for your safety. For many non-emergency situations, an officer will likely contact with you over Zoom, Teams, or telephone. Officers continue to respond to emergency calls in person. Our dispatchers can also always be reached at campussafety@up.edu

Health & Counseling Center

The Health and Counseling Center (HCC) remains committed to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for students needing quality primary care and mental health services. For primary care services, all previously offered services continue to be available to current students. Common reasons students seek medical care include cold/flu, injuries, stomach problems, headaches/migraines, sexual health, and concussions. Appointments that do not require an in-person evaluation will be conducted via telemedicine. All appointments are free, but tests (such as for sore throats, flu, and mono) and medications will be offered at a low cost to students.

For mental health services, the HCC offers counseling, crisis intervention, and referral services to all current students. Counseling services will be conducted via telehealth visits. All appointments are free for students. During this time of uncertainty, the mental health staff recognize the need for additional support to help students cope with the challenges of adjusting to the changes in college and in their community. The HCC will offer new wellness programs and resources focused on helping students develop new strategies for coping and enhancing resilience. After-hours counseling and crisis services will continue to be available to students during the evenings, weekends, holidays, and school breaks.

To make an appointment at the HCC, students can call (503) 943-7134.
