Constructive and Sustained Dialogue at UP
Individual Dignity & Community Values
Constructive and Sustained Dialogue is the model we use to respectfully engage, respectfully disagree, and grow in understanding of the other, even when we see their "truth" as antithetical to our own. Constructive and Sustained Dialogue allows us to see the dignity of the other regardless of whether or not we agree with them on important beliefs.
As a Catholic, Holy Cross Institution, our values include seeing the dignity and worth of each individual while also valuing the community in which individuals live, work, and socialize with one another. We must engage respectfully and thoughtfully with "the other," anyone we disagree with, don't understand, or find difficult. In engaging, we do not give up our own beliefs, identities, experiences, or culture. We do keep an open mind and heart so we may hear the perspective and lived "truth" of the other.
