The Student Health Center is a comprehensive primary care clinic offering appointments for illnesses, injuries, and preventative care. Our clinicians can order imaging, lab work, refill prescriptions, and generate referrals to specialists. Many UP students transition their primary care to the Student Health Center during their time at UP.
You can view a comprehensive list of our offered services on our homepage under "Primary Care Services at UP".
Please note, if you have an urgent medical need, you may be advised to visit an off-campus urgent care facility or emergency room; please see our list of local off-campus facilities on our Health Emergency Resources and After-Hours Primary Care pages. The Health Center does not have the capacity to operate as an urgent care or emergency facility.
University of Portland students who are currently enrolled either full-time or part-time are eligible for primary care services and treatment. Students who are on academic suspension or who have taken a medical or other leave from the University are not eligible for services, but may be seen for a one-time consultation appointment for assistance with off-campus referrals.
Alumni, former UP students, faculty, and staff are not eligible for services. Staff and faculty who are enrolled in classes using the employee benefit are not eligible for Health Center services.
This depends on our availability. The Health Center reserves at least 2 to 4 same day medical appointments every day that can be scheduled on a first come, first served basis. To schedule a same day appointment, call the front desk at 503.943.7134.
The Health Center operates as a primary care facility, meaning we offer non-urgent medical and wellness appointments as well as some same-day illness appointments (dependent on availability). If you have an urgent medical need, you may be advised to visit an off-campus urgent care facility or emergency room; please see our list of local off-campus facilities on our After-Hours Primary Care page. The Health Center does not have the capacity to operate as an urgent care or emergency facility.
If you called the Health Center and got our voicemail, we are either on the other line with another student, or you reached us outside of our business hours of Monday through Friday, 8:30am-12:00pm and 1:00pm-4:30pm.
If you get our voicemail, please leave us a message with your name and a callback number. We will return your call within the next business day. Voicemails received during business hours are typically responded to within the same day.
Before your appointment, login to the secure patient portal using your normal UP login...
For in-person appointments: Please arrive at least 5 minutes early for your appointment so you can complete the self-check-in process. You will need to bring your insurance card for billing. Please plan to wear an appropriate face mask if you are experiencing any symptoms of illness.
For online appointments: Please check in for your appointment at least 5 minutes early by following the directions in the secure patient portal. Log into the Patient Portal using your normal UP login, and under “Appointments” you’ll find the link for your visit. Once checked in, your provider will begin your video session momentarily (the screen may be blank until your provider starts the appointment).
According to our confidentiality policy, the Health Center does not share any student's health information with faculty members; therefore the Health Center does not write sick notes to excuse absences.
If you need to miss class due to an illness or injury, please communicate with your professors to let them know. UP Faculty are aware of our policy and should trust that you are missing class for a legitimate health reason. If your professor has any questions or concerns about this policy, please direct them to contact the Health Center at 503.943.7134 or hcc@up.edu.
The Health and Counseling staff do not currently complete comprehensive testing for a learning concern, nor do we prescribe medication for ADHD. However, we are more than happy to refer you to an off-campus provider to get the care that you need. You are welcome to schedule a consultation appointment with a clinician to discuss options or contact Accessible Education Services.
The amount you pay for an appointment will depend on the type of appointment and your insurance benefits. We will not collect payment at the time of your appointment but will bill your insurance. You will receive instructions on how to pay for services when you receive a bill from our billing company.
If you have a plan with a deductible, you may be responsible for paying the full cost of care you receive until you meet the deductible. Be aware that if you have a high deductible, you may need to meet that full amount before your insurance contributes to the cost of your care on or off campus. Call your insurance company to ask if you have a deductible before receiving medical care on or off campus.
If you have an HMO plan, services at the SHC will not be covered by your insurance. Please verify the type of plan you have before making an appointment.
Some services may not be covered under your specific insurance plan (mental health services, travel medicine, sports physicals, etc.). Please be familiar with the benefits of your plan.
Cash pay options are available for students with plans that are out of network at the SHC. Please call us at 503-943-7134 to learn more!
We strongly recommend you contact your insurance company to determine your medical benefits within the state of Oregon.
Yes! The Student Health Center is in network with multiple major health insurance companies, including the student health insurance provider, PacificSource. Waiving the student health insurance has no impact on your ability to make an appointment for care.
Students with the Student Health Insurance through PacificSource receive care at the SHC with no out of pocket cost (no deductible, co-pay, co-insurance, or fees).
Call the customer/ member service number on the back of your insurance card and ask if the University of Portland Student Health Center is in-network with your health insurance plan. You may be asked for a Tax ID and NPI.
Tax ID: 930401259
NPI: 1356545875
That depends; every health insurance plan is different. Even if two plans are from the same insurance company, they could have very different coverage and benefits. The best way to find out how much a visit may cost is by calling your health insurance plan’s customer/ member service number. You can usually find this number on the back of your insurance card, or on your insurance company's website.
Your bill can be paid by phone at 503.384.2988 or online at the website provided on your billing statement.
The Student Health Center and Student Accounts offices do not collect any forms of payment for medical bills that are accrued at the Health Center.
All students, regardless of insurance status, can be seen at the Student Health Center. If we are not contracted with your insurance, you will receive a bill for the full cost of your visit. You can submit any bill for services received from the Student Health Center to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.
Please note that if the SHC is not in-network with your insurance, you may be able to find more affordable care with an in-network, off-campus provider. We’d be happy to assist you with finding this care, if needed!
Certain types of visits, including appointments with our Registered Nurse, are offered free of charge to all active students. Please call us at 503.943.7134 or email us at hcc@up.edu for more information about these visits.
With most insurance plans, preventative care including physicals, well visits, and immunizations are fully covered with no out-of-pocket costs. Contact your insurance company using the phone number on your insurance card to see if this is the case with your insurance plan.
Labs completed in the Student Health Center will be included in your bill. Labs performed by or sent to Quest Diagnostics will be billed separately by Quest.
If you go to Quest Diagnostics for a lab visit, always bring your insurance card with you. If your correct insurance information is not provided to Quest, you will be billed for the full cost of your lab tests.
If your parent, guardian, spouse or other family member is the policyholder for your health insurance plan (meaning if your plan’s policy is in their name and they pay for it), any Explanation of Benefits (EOB) statements will likely be sent to their address.
If you do not want your health insurance plan to send mail containing your personal health information to your family address, you need to submit a confidential communication request to your insurance company. It can take up to 30 days for your insurance company to process your request, so it’s best to do this as soon as possible. It will be your responsibility to ensure that your current mailing address is correct if you are concerned about a bill or EOB being sent to your family’s address. Information and instructions for requesting confidential communications from your insurance company can be found here.
If you receive healthcare services at the Health Center, our billing company will bill your health insurance plan. Any remaining balance (such as copays, coinsurance, or deductible) will then be billed to you. This bill will include information about the services your received. At the time of scheduling your appointment at the Student Health Center, you will need to provide a local/mailing address that you receive mail at in order for your bills to be sent directly to you.
An Explanation of Benefits will usually contain information like:
The description of services/ procedures you received could be named or detailed. If this kind of personal health information is something you do not want your parent, guardian, spouse, or other family member(s) to see, you need to submit a request for confidential communication to your insurance company BEFORE you receive any services at the Student Health Center. It could take your insurance company anywhere from a week to a month to process your request, so you need to submit the request as early as possible, and call your insurance company to confirm whether or not your request has been processed yet, before coming to the SHC for services.
If you receive healthcare services before making a request for confidential communication, or before the request has been processed, your Explanation of Benefits (EOB) containing your personal health information will be sent to the policyholder for your health insurance plan.
You can visit our After-Hours Primary Care page for a list of clinics that are close to campus, or you can call the phone number on the back of your insurance card to ask which facilities you are covered at in the Portland area.
If you are experiencing a medical emergency, please call 911, Campus Safety at 503.943.4444, or go to the nearest emergency room.
The Student Health Center values our ability to provide students with a safe and confidential place to seek help. Therefore, we will not disclose student information to parents, friends, coaching staff, or faculty unless we have signed release from the student. If a student is in imminent danger, emergency contacts will be notified by the University.
Please be aware that clinicians and administrative staff at the Health Center are bound by Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), which prohibits us from disclosing information about a student without their knowledge and written consent. While we are happy to answer your general questions regarding our policies and procedures at the Health Center, we cannot speak specifically about your student.
When parents, faculty, or staff members are concerned about the physical, emotional, academic or personal health of a student, the University Care Team Program can assess the situation, offer support, and provide referrals to the breadth of resources on-campus.
If you have been made aware of an emergency situation on campus, please contact Campus Safety at 503.943.4444.
This depends. If a student has a medical emergency and is transported to a local hospital, the Health Center may not be aware of the situation. If a student is transported from the Health Center, and has consented to having their emergency contacts notified, their emergency contacts would be notified by a Health Center staff member. If the student is transported to the hospital from anywhere else on or off-campus, and the Health Center was not informed, our office would not be able to notify you of a situation that we are not aware of.
The Health Center recommends that parents have an alternate contact to reach their student in the event that campus administration is not notified of an emergency situation. This can be in the form of exchanging phone numbers with their roommate(s), saving the phone number for their on-campus Hall Director staff, or discussing an emergency action plan with your student.
The Associate Dean of your student's school/college is the first point of contact for questions regarding medical leaves of absence or withdrawals from the University. To schedule a time to discuss your student's options for leave, please contact the appropriate school.
