Public Health

The University of Portland’s Pre-College Public Health course introduces high school students to the dynamic and meaningful world of public health. Through hands-on activities, guest speakers, and real-world case studies, students will explore how health systems, policies, and data shape the well-being of populations.

This summer course provides an engaging overview of public health topics such as epidemiology, health equity, global health, and community wellness. Whether you're passionate about social justice, health care, or science, this program offers a deeper understanding of how public health professionals work to prevent disease and promote health across communities.

Led by University of Portland faculty and professionals in the field, students will gain insight into potential careers and majors in health science, public policy, and healthcare advocacy. You'll engage in interactive discussions and apply critical thinking skills to solve challenges affecting both local and global communities.

Outcomes

  • Explore the diversity of careers in public health.
  • Identify the subdisciplines in public health, including: environmental health, epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy and social and behavioral sciences.
  • Learn about the root causes of health and disease.
  • Discuss how behavioral, social, economical, environmental and policy factors influence the health of individuals and communities.
  • Learn to promote and protect the health and lives of individuals locally and globally.
  • Connect with local governmental and non-governmental organizations that are impacting the health of communities in Oregon.
