First-Year & Transfer Housing

The housing application for incoming first-year and transfer students is available to all new students who have confirmed enrollment at the University of Portland.

After you have confirmed your enrollment and set up your PIlotsUP portal access, you are ready to apply for housing. The housing application is located within the Pilot Housing Portal, which is accessible by clicking the "Sign Up for Housing" button below. The best way to log in is to scroll down and select the option for "Single Sign On" or "SSO." Once inside the portal, choose the "Academic Year 2025-2026" application.

For any questions, please contact the Office of Residence Life and we will be happy to assist you. We can be reached at reslife@up.edu or 503-943-7205.

How and when will I choose a roommate?

The housing application lets incoming students build their own roommate profile and search for compatible roommates. Roommate compatibility is determined using software with very good results. New students can certainly use the software to search for roommates they know, though we find that new students tend to have the best and most successful roommate experiences when they build their profile and let the system help them find a compatible roommate.

We will use the software to create housing and roommate assignments in June 2025. Students should not worry about trying to find a compatible roommate now. More students will be admitted and available to search for as the Spring progresses. Also, students may meet good potential roommates at Weekend on the Bluff and/or Summer WAVE

When will I learn my housing and roommate assignments?

New incoming student should submit their housing applications by June 10th, 2025. Housing and roommate assignments will be created and communicated at the end of June.

When will I move in?

New incoming first-year (class of 2029) and transfer students will move in on Thursday, August 21st 2025. More details, including times, will be available later this Spring. Unfortunately, new incoming students cannot arrive earlier than their scheduled Move In Day.

Where can first-year students live?

Incoming first-year students in the Class of 2029 can choose from six residence halls:

Female-Facing Halls: Kenna and Mehling Halls

Male-Facing Halls: Christie and Villa Maria Halls

Co-Ed Halls: Corrado and Shipstad Halls (Shipstad is re-opening in August after renovations and a full refresh!)

Two Year Residency Requirement & Experience

In support of the residential nature of UP and our emphasis on community, and based on longstanding research linking on campus housing with student and academic success in college, all full-time undergraduate students are required to live on campus during their first and second years at UP. For the purposes of this requirement, class year is based on total number of academic years in college.

Please click here to read about the benefits of living on campus, especially at UP!

On campus housing is also available for our juniors, seniors and graduate students, and many of these students choose to continue living on campus for their entire time at UP.

Two Year Residency Requirement Exemptions

Incoming students who will be in their first or second years of college may request to be exempt from UP's two-year residency requirement. Exemptions will only be approved in cases where both of the following criteria are met:

  1. The incoming student will be residing at home with parent(s) and/or guardian(s);
  2. The incoming student will be residing at an address that is within a 20-mile radius of the UP campus.

Exemptions will also be approved for incoming students who will be 21 years of age or older at the start of their first semester on campus, and/or who are married.

To apply for an exemption to UP's two year residency requirement, please submit this application form. Incoming Students will need to log in to their UP applicant portal to access this form (their username is the email address they applied to UP with). Housing requirement exemption applications are reviewed twice monthly by a committee. Applicants will be emailed within two weeks with a decision on their residency requirement exemption request.
