The majority of banks offer similar services to students wishing to open a bank account. However there are differences in the fees each bank charges and the minimum balance each bank requires in the type of account for which you apply. In order to find the best price and style of account for your needs you should research several banks for details about their services. In order to open a bank account you will need both your passport and University of Portland ID (identification) card. If you do not yet have your ID, a second piece of photo identification will be required.
The most commonly used bank accounts are checking and saving. If you open a checking account, you can deposit money into this account, then write checks or use a debit card to make purchases. This is convenient and safe because you won't need to carry a large amount of cash with you. The purpose of opening a savings account is to allow money you would like to save to accumulate interest. If you open a savings account, please keep in mind that although you can make withdrawals, most of these accounts don't offer the convenience of writing checks or using a debit card to make purchases. In addition, some banks may require you to keep a minimum amount of money in these accounts in order to avoid a service charge. Remember each bank may offer a different interest rate.
